Orca’s or killer whales are the most widely distributed of all whales and dolphins and can be found in every ocean. The male of the species can weigh up to 10,000kg and have a dorsal fin as high as 6 foot tall (2 metres). They can swim at speeds of up to 54km/h and can cover distances of up to 160km in a day, foraging and socialising.
Orcas worldwide face a number of threats. They get caught in fishing nets and gear accidentally and face problems with toxic waste and pollution. Increase in boat traffic can also result in collisions with Orcas and an increase in underwater noise pollution. In some countries they are still caught and put into captivity.
These amazing wooden toy Orca’s from NOM Handcrafted represent the beauty of these incredible animals perfectly and are a wonderful hands-on way for children to learn all about them.
