Like most Australian animals, the pelican is hailed as a sacred creature by Indigenous Australians. The Wangkamura people of South Australia credit the pelican for the creation of opals and fire and in another story, Goolay-Yali the pelican is credited with creating the very first effective fishing net.
Pelicans have an impressive wingspan of around five meters, allowing them to soar up to an incredible 3000 meters in the air. This impressive feat is made possible by the air bags located in their bones, neck, chest, skin and wings, which improves their aerodynamics and make their flight even more efficient.
